World Health Organization Raises Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Under a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with holistic and ongoing support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, says the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages countries and companies to increase availability, by measures like licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Operate

The injections imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and boost feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Patients usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may see weight return within a year of discontinuing the medication, because their typical hunger come back.

Being overweight or obese increases your chance for developing health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Excess weight affects people in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
