Zohran Mamdani Pledges a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
